What can an airline pilot write off on their taxes?

For example, if I purchase a nice headset and new luggage would any of that be tax deductible since I’m a professional pilot and need those items for work?

With the new tax plan, I believe no.

Previoulsy, as long as your un-reimbursed business expenses exceeded 2% of your income, you could deduct things like union dues, uniforms, dry cleaning, headsets, work luggage, per-diem v. govt per-diem differential, etc. I’ll probably have to consult a tax person again this year to see how the new tax laws shake out.

Are there any tax companies/people that are pretty well-versed about the airlines? Anyone you know that deals with a lot of pilots?

ABOUT

I use these guys to calculate government allowed per-diem extracted from my schedule. They then figure the per-diem in which you were paid and give you line-by-line 1040 entry instructions to deduct the difference from your taxable income.

So, very simply,  if an overnight in Guatemala City is authorized $120 a night in per-diem and Delta only paid me $65, I can deduct $55 from my income.

I think they charge about $75 for the analysis and I usually find $1500-2000 worth of decuctions.

Tho, 2018 and forward, I don’t know if this will apply.
